AMP's experience in the development of credentialing (licensure and certification) examinations shows that the most effective approach to item generation is through an Item Writing Workshop. The primary advantage is the level of quality control of the final product. Since examination items are the cornerstone of a high quality examination, it is important that each item be carefully developed, researched and reviewed prior to its use.
At an Item Writing Workshop, sufficient time will be provided to present an item writing orientation, practice writing and critiquing items and receive content and psychometric feedback. Each item writer will have an opportunity to learn the basic skills of item writing and generate items in an assigned area from the test specifications. AMP suggests that item writing committees consist of content specialists representative of the practitioner population to the extent possible. Item Writing Workshops can be conducted in person or via a web conference.
